The Great Brown Ice Cream Caper

It was packed into a cardboard box and lived in the freezer where day after day the other Farmies gazed at it with a mix of longing and frustration. It rhymed with Lice Team. It was delicious. Today it was going to be even more delicious as he was armed with a monstrous bottle of Ghirardelli's chocolate syrup.

a note about Nathaniel and chocolate: Nathaniel may have an unhealthy relationship with chocolate. Often he seems to believe that he can subdue those little chocolate chips into submission. Also he plays hide and seek with them.

Little did he know that he was going to get MORE CHOCOLATE THAN HE EVER BARGAINED FOR. He took the cardboard box out of the freezer... opened the lid...

Some chocolate chip-laying insect had laid a whole nest of spawn right there in the false safety of the nest of ice cream.

This is the point in the story where the chocolate content just spirals waay out of control... My antihistamines just can't handle it anymore. Just imagine the trauma of being there... *scratch* *scratch*

Saturday in the Kitchen

From what I heard, the morning kicked off with a pancake breakfast, which I wasn't able to attend and therefore document (sadness). However, rumor has it that it was fun and delicious.

Home culturing and fermenting was the name of the game this week. There's currently some ginger beer in the making that's highly anticipated. If all goes well, there'll be some soy-yogurt later in the week as well. I'm currently trying to make some injera (an Ethiopian bread) from scratch, which is a several-day long process that involves letting teff flour sour in water. Here's Case doing most of the teff-grinding work for me:

It turns out that teff is a total pain to grind up in a mortar and pestle. A grain mill is next on my farm house wish-list.
